Charlotte Hat - Free Crochet Pattern

This hat is a great choice for keeping your head warm this winter! Currently only in adult sizes, but can be made in any color, and so many things you can do for a flower or just leave the flower off all together!

Finished Size:
Adult Size Small, Medium, or Large

Materials:
-Approx. 3 oz of Lion Brand Homespun
-J hook (or size needed to obtain the gauge specified in pattern)
-Yarn Needle
-Optional: Flower hair clip or materials needed for flower or embellishment of choice

Pattern:

Pattern Notes:
*Ch 2 at beginning of each round counts as a stitch in Rnds 6-14.
*To join at end of round, sl st in top of first dc made in round, not the chain.

16 shells (Adult Small):
ch 3, or create a magic loop and ch 2
Rnd 1: 10 dc in first chain made, or in magic loop, join. (10 dc)
Rnd 2: ch 2, 2 dc in ea st around, join. (20 dc)
Rnd 3: ch 2, *2 dc in first st, dc in next st, rpt from * around, join. (30 dc)
     *Hat should measure about 3" in diameter at this point. If not, go up or a down a hook size.
Rnd 4: ch 2, *2 dc in first st, dc in next 2 sts, rpt from * around, join. (40 dc)
Rnd 5: ch 2, [2 dc in first st, dc in next 3 sts] 4 times, dc in next 4 sts, repeat between brackets 4 more times, dc in next 4 sts, join. (48 dc)
     *Hat should measure about 6" in diameter at this point.
Rnd 6: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, *skip two sts, 3 dc in next st {shell made}, rpt from * around, sl st into the first dc made. (16 shells)
Rnds 7-13: sl st loosely in next dc, sl st in hole between the two shells, ch 2, 2 dc in hole, *3 dc in next hole {shell made}, repeat from * around, join with sl st in first dc made in rnd. (16 shells)
Rnd 14: ch 1, *sc in first/next 2 dc, sc in hole between shells, skip next dc {first dc of shell} rpt from * around. (48 sc)
Rnds 15-16: sc in ea st around. (48 sc)
Fasten off and weave in end.

17 shells (Adult Medium):
ch 3, or create a magic loop and ch 2
Rnd 1: 10 dc in first chain made, or in magic loop, join. (10 dc)
Rnd 2: ch 2, 2 dc in ea st around, join. (20 dc)
Rnd 3: ch 2, *2 dc in first st, dc in next st, rpt from * around, join. (30 dc)
     *Hat should measure about 3" in diameter at this point. If not, go up or a down a hook size.
Rnd 4: ch 2, *2 dc in first st, dc in next 2 sts, rpt from * around, join. (40 dc)
Rnd 5: ch 2, *2 dc in first st, dc in next 3 sts, rpt from * around, join. (50 dc)
     *Hat should measure about 6" in diameter at this point.
Rnd 6: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, *skip two sts, 3 dc in next st {shell made}, rpt from * to last st, skip last st, sl st into the first dc made. (17 shells)
Rnds 7-14: sl st loosely in next dc, sl st in hole between the two shells, ch 2, 2 dc in hole, *3 dc in next hole {shell made}, repeat from * around, join with sl st in first dc made in rnd. (17 shells)
Rnd 15: ch 1, *sc in first/next 2 dc, sc in hole between shells, skip next dc {first dc of shell} rpt from * around. (51 sc)
Rnds 16-17: sc in ea st around. (51 sc)
Fasten off and weave in end.

18 shells (Adult Large):
ch 3, or create a magic loop and ch 2
Rnd 1: 10 dc in first chain made, or in magic loop, join. (10 dc)
Rnd 2: ch 2, 2 dc in ea st around, join. (20 dc)
Rnd 3: ch 2, *2 dc in first st, dc in next st, rpt from * around, join. (30 dc)
     *Hat should measure about 3" in diameter at this point. If not, go up or a down a hook size.
Rnd 4: ch 2, *2 dc in first st, dc in next 2 sts, rpt from * around, join. (40 dc)
Rnd 5: ch 2, *2 dc in first st, dc in next 3 sts, rpt from * around, join. (50 dc)
     *Hat should measure about 6" in diameter at this point.
Rnd 6: ch 2, 2 dc in first st, *skip two sts, 3 dc in next st {shell made}, rpt from * to last st, skip last st, sl st into the first dc made. (18 shells)
Rnds 7-14: sl st loosely in next dc, sl st in hole between the two shells, ch 2, 2 dc in hole, *3 dc in next hole {shell made}, repeat from * around, join with sl st in first dc made in rnd. (18 shells)
Rnd 15: ch 1, *sc in first/next 2 dc, sc in hole between shells, skip next dc {first dc of shell} rpt from * around. (54 sc)
Rnds 16-17: sc in ea st around. (54 sc)
Fasten off and weave in end.

Flower:
For the flower, you can:
     1) Use a hair clip-on flower and position is wherever you want (as shown on red hat).
     2) Use my Fabulous Flower pattern, and either sew it on, or put the flower on a clip (shown below).
     3) Use any other embellishment you want or don't put anything on at all.
